Richard George Loomis, age 85, of Springfield died Friday, February 14, 2014 at the St. Cloud Veterans Care Center. Dick was born January 13, 1929 in Kansas City, Kansas. He was adopted by Albert and Bess Loomis. He was baptized and a confirmed member of the United Methodist Church. He graduated from Springfield Public School in 1947 and attended the University of Minnesota for 1 year. The following year he moved to California and worked for Bemis Bag Company. In 1950 he was drafted into the US Army, and left for Basic Training on December 23. In 1951, he was deployed to Korea where he was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart. When he returned to active duty he was awarded a battlefield commission to Second Lieutenant. Following his return to Fort Benning, Georgia in 1952, he was commissioned to First Lieutenant. Dick returned to Springfield on January 17, 1953 in the midst of a snow storm to marry Yvonne Lorene Cullen in the United Methodist Church on January 18, 1953. They returned to Fort Riley, Kansas until he was honorably discharged in 1954. They returned to Springfield where he worked as a car salesman at Cullen’s Garage. In 1969 Dick and Yvonne took over the business. They changed the name to Loomis Motors and operated the business until 1986. From 1986 to 1995 Dick was the Course Superintendent for the Springfield Golf Club. During that time he also coached the High School Boys and Girls Golf teams. Dick was a member of the American Legion Post 257 and was very active in the community. He served as President of the Golf Course Board, Chairman of the Springfield Community Hospital Board, and the Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, bowling, visiting, and playing Bridge. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and grandkids.
He is survived by Yvonne, his wife of 62 years, children Peggy Larson and Tucker and wife Shari all of Springfield, six grandchildren- Heather (Mike) Hille of Eagan, Brandon (Alicia) of Minneapolis, Christian of Mankato, Jeanne (Kevin) Krigbaum of Minneapolis, Anne (Scott) Mygind of Chicago, IL, Johnny Larson, Springfield, great grandchildren Carlyn Ward, Christiaan, Alex, Chloe, Carter, Cole Tucker Hille, and Keegan Krigbaum. He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Bess Loomis.
